Watching the Universe
Unknown - dated: late middle ages
colorprint
At the end of the middle ages in the fifteenth century mankind mechanized in its worldview. The first clocks had appeared in the church-towers and one was fascinated by the mechanics of the universe. What would be the truth of the stars, what is there behind it all, how does it work? This print gives a humorous picture of man spying for order and meaning as if he's looking for something the way a clock would be built. Would there also be a kind of cogwheels for the stars, neatly ranking clouds and other mechanics? This little man doesn't really know: he is the new scientist trying to find out and is thus setting the image for science up till the present day. We still have an open mind and try to look where we cannot see for the order of matter, time and space. We stay that medieval traveler with his staff and adventurous zeal
